| This medical illustration series dramatically depicts a traumatic knee injury resulting in reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD0 with subsequent treatment . The pain pathway of RSD, also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS, is shown originating in the knee, following a course to the brain, triggering a sympathetic inflammatory response of the blood vessels in the leg, resulting in pain, swelling and skin mottling.
