An injury initiates a pain impulse which follows a path to the brain, and the brain triggers another impulse back to the original area of injury triggering an inflammatory response which causes swelling, burning, tingling and pain that triggers another impulse establishing a cycle of pain and swelling for which is referred as a Chronic regional pain syndrome.
